Hundreds walk for breast cancer in St Kitts

Assembling at Caribbean Cinemas, in West Basseterre, the 900 strong breast cancer advocates walked along the FT Williams Highway before turning right onto the Kim Collins Highway into Frigate Bay.

Speaking with after the event, President of the Essence of Hope Breast Cancer Foundation, Pamela Armstrong-Hendrickson said the event saw a significant turned out as compared to previous years, which has shown that more persons are becoming aware of breast cancer and its impact on society.

Armstrong-Hendrickson added that next year’s event would be even bigger.

“This one is the biggest ever and it’s getting bigger and bigger and we had a little over 900 persons turning out, so we are very happy and I know by next year we will reach past the thousands. The Federation gets to see that we are in support of the survivors of breast cancer.”

On this note, she revealed that they “unmasked” breast cancer through the walk while congratulating the participants for making the event a success.

Several political figures took the opportunity to show support for the cause, with Deputy Prime Minister Earle Asim Martin jogging along the route, he was joined by Minister of Health Marcella Liburd, Deputy Leader for the Peoples Action Movement, Jonel Powell and political candidate for the Labour party Konris Maynard.

“Everybody was happy to see the politicians showing their support for the cause,” Armstrong-Hendrickson stated.

Commenting on the month of activities to reflect on and raise awareness for breast cancer, Armstrong-Hendrickson noted that all events were successful and the support the foundation has received was tremendous.

“It has been going very well and we just have one more event to go and that would be out pink carpet gala on the 1st November and we are really expecting a lot of persons to come out.”

Tickets for the gala are Ec$200 with popular comedian Errol Fabian out of Trinidad expected to perform.
