Hunte Says West Indies Women On Target For Qualifiers

West Indies Women produced a number of emphatic performances to easily take the four-match series 3-1 at Arnos Vale in St Vincent.

“Barring the hiccup in the third ODI, your team has demonstrated that it intends to be competitive not only against Pakistan, but importantly in the World Cup qualifiers in Bangladesh later this year,” Hunte wrote to team captain Merissa Aguilleira.

West Indies Women are scheduled to play in Group B of the ICC World Cup qualifiers later this year alongside Pakistan, Ireland, Japan and hosts Bangladesh.

“This impressive victory signals to all that you continue on your path towards the very pinnacle of world cricket,” Hunte continued.

“We continue to be proud of your notable achievements and reaffirm the board’s commitment to ensuring that you are equipped to move upward, and it is because of this commitment that we instituted retainer contracts for women.”

Captain leads

West Indies were led by their vice-captain Anisa Mohammed, who picked up 14 wickets with her crafty off spin, including two five-wicket hauls.

In the process, the 23-year-old Trinidadian passed 50 wickets in 44 one-day internationals.

“I must highlight two outstanding performances of our champion spinner Anisa and specifically congratulate her on the historic feat of becoming the first female West Indian to achieve 50 wickets in ODIs,” Hunte pointed out.

“I note that she is even making strides forward with the bat and look forward to her establishing herself as a genuine all-rounder in the future.”

West Indies will now their attention to the four-match Twenty20 international series, which begins with a double-header in Grenada today.
