The forum entitled “Intellectual Property Rights – From Creation to Protection” will take place at the University Center on Thursday April 26, 2012 at 7:00pm, as part of ‘World Intellectual Property Day’.
According to organizers, the Intellectual Property Office is also seeking to sensitize creators and inventors about the importance of embracing Intellectual Property as an asset comparable to land and equipment and as such can be owned, bought and sold.
Local officials say they have observed that many persons are unaware of the need to protect this valuable asset, hence the need for the forum.
The session will also provide an overview of how patents, designs, trademarks and copyright can be used to protect their creations and inventions.
World Intellectual Property Day was established by the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO) in 2000 to “raise awareness of how patents, copyright, trademarks and designs impact on daily life” and “to celebrate creativity, and the contribution made by creators and innovators to the development of societies across the globe”.
The date was chosen as this was the day on which the Convention Establishing the World Intellectual Property Organization became effective in 1970.
