One such cause is domestic violence. Nearly one billion women face violence annually and one in four women in the United States will become a victim (or partner violence) in her lifetime. These grim numbers terrify me, as I’m sure they do you. Chances are if you haven’t been personally affected, you know someone who has and that strikes a chord too close to home.
There’s a small way to make a big difference this International Women’s Day, and that is to purchase an Avon Foundation Circle of Support Necklace ($5; shop.avon.com).
The piece is beautiful in its simplicity with interwoven branches of silvertone that form a circle. It’s the same circle that I picture in my mind if we were to all gather round and hold hands to help each other in times of need.
Given the price, you can get one for yourself and perhaps a few more for other women in your life. The next time you have lunch, you can offer the necklace as a surprise gift. This will spark another conversation about domestic violence and its vicious cycle and our need to eradicate it.
As Reese Witherspoon says, “I encourage everyone to wear and share this necklace to help raise vital money for domestic abuse services. Pass it on to help raise awareness so that more women can live free from violence.”
Reese happens to be an honorary chair of the foundation. She lends her celebrity and eloquence to spread the word this International Women’s Day, but honestly we’re the ones in a position of power to create change.
Because it is women and men beginning the discussion and sharing that discussion with more and more people that a movement for true change begins. We have to speak up. I feel like this necklace does just that by the simple act of wearing and sharing it.
This is a cause that transcends age. (Now I’m standing up as I type.) For no matter how old we are, we can help put an end to violence against women.
