Jamaica receives help in crime fight

US State Department deputy assistant secretary, Julissa Reynoso explained the objective was to send prosecutors to assist relevant ministries prosecute and bring those who commit crimes to justice.

That assistance will fall within the partnership between the United States and the Caribbean through the Caribbean Basin Security Initiative, designed to combat the drug trade and other transnational crimes that threaten regional security.

Reynoso noted that it was still too early to say how many prosecutors will be deployed to Jamaica to carry out the function.

She noted that the Jamaican government had indicated that it needed support in ensuring that those behind organized crimes were brought to justice, and gave the assurance that the US government will continue to support Jamaican authorities in that regard
