Speaking exclusively to MiyVue.com, the candidate said that even though Liburd has already made several changes to the Central Basseterre area, his agenda for the district will see more than what “she did in the last five years.”
“I want to bring about a change in Central Basseterre and ultimately in the country that makes people’s lives better than they are now. I want to bring about a change in the country which makes the cost of living lower, by giving people more money in their pockets,” Powell said.
Powell further noted that once elected, he wants to be a part of a Government that reduces the mortgages on homes, thus contributing to better a quality of living for residents of the federation.
“Particularly in Central Basseterre, I want to bring about more changes that create opportunities for young people for sustainable and long term employment… There is a lot of work that needs to get done in Central Basseterre, and I am of the opinion that the current representative is either unwilling or incapable of doing what is necessary,” Powell said.
The issue of health, according to Powell is one of the main areas Liburd has not delivered to the people, adding that the health care system in St. Kitts and Nevis needs a change.
“For example, we cannot forget the Basseterre High School issue. But specifically to Central Basseterre, the number of abandoned homes; empty and over grown house lots which adversely affects the community… from a health issue, garbage dumping, rodents, mosquitoes to security issues,” Powell said.
The political candidate further noted that crime is also one of the main issues in the Central Basseterre District, adding that security in the district will be one of main focuses if elected.
“I have known and seen too many young men who have been shot and murdered, and it doesn’t seem to be decreasing. It is continuing, and so this is another issue that I want to address and will address once I am elected into Government,” Powell said.
