According to a release from SKABA, the St. Kitts Amateur Basketball Association, seven teams, have registered to compete for top honours when the season tips off this Saturday March 19th at Basketball City, Victoria Road, Basseterre.
Only four (4) teams participated in the youth tournament in 2010, and organizers are hoping that with the added number this year, the competition would prove to be even more exciting.
The teams registered for the 2011 season are Rams Hitters, Horsford’s Ghetto Roots, Blue Devils, and Bird Rock Uprisers along with Trotters who will be returning after a few years absence. The defending Champions, Fruta Falcons will be fielding an unprecedented 2 teams for this year’s tournament.
SKABA’s President, Romel Tobias, said in a recent release, “I think this new executive that I am privileged to lead has started this SKABA season on a good note, with an improvement in the number of teams participating in this year’s Junior Tournament”.
“Last year we had just 4 teams and this year we have increased the number of participating teams to 7 which is a significant improvement. I think this is good for the future development of the SKABA,” Tobias continued.
The Fruta Falcons team has won the last 5 SKABA Junior League Championships and will be shooting for an unprecedented 6th straight title
The start of the league will feature .all seven teams from the Junior Division. The opening night match-ups will also feature an “A” Division clash between the Shawn K. Richards Sandy Point Chappurtin and the newest addition to SKABA, the Nevis based PJ’s.
The second match will see the 5 time defending Champions Sandy Point Fruta Flacons and Rams Hitters in a re-match of last year’s final. The First day of the regular season will be on Sunday 20th March. . The junior league is expected to run into the first week of the national league which has a tentative open date of Sunday April 17th.
