Kim Collins Day Fading Away

However, according to some supporters and colleagues of Mr. Collins, sadly eight years later, no one seems to remember.

In an interview with Collins’ associate, Mr Vernon Springer, he said that he does not think that the people of St. Kitts and Nevis are aware of the true value of the day and they do not know what it means for our federation to produce such a ‘world class athlete’. The day is not fully recognised as it should be,” said the sports journalist.

“Whether or not it is political, the 25th of August will always be Kim Collins Day to me and should have been fully established” Springer said.

He went on to speak about the issues he and other supporters faced, when trying to make the day meaningful with events.

Sadly no legislation was passed to really recognize the day, complained Springer.

He suggest that the government of St. Kitts and Nevis organize a run through the streets of Basseterre, ending at the Kim Collins High Way, with the incorporation of primary and secondary school students, as well as the general public, in honour of Mr Collins.

In relation to the Kim Collins High Way, Mr Springer said, that he is very disappointed, that of all the advertisements displayed on the Kim Collins Highway, there is no sign to say that “This is the Kim Collins Highway”.

Mr. Jabou Dolphin and Mr. James ‘Barman’ Hanley are also supporters of the day, and in recognition of Kim’s accomplishment they normally organise Get-togethers in the Market Street area for the Day but over the years such events became dormant.

Kim Collins himself tries to celebrate his day by hosting parties and other social events at his house, but is unable to do so this year because of his role in the 2011 IAAF Championships, to represent the federation.

Mr Springer said in a strong voice that the athletic association should be the one taking the lead to organize annual activities for the occasion.

He ended by saying he expects Kim to do well in his category races because of the fact that so many people are dropping out of the races and that at Kim’s age (35) this would be a remarkable achievement.
