Kim Collins set for Glasgow

The St. Kitts and Nevis sprinter will compete over both 60m and 200m for a Commonwealth Select team against athletes from Great Britain and Northern Ireland, the USA, Russia and Germany.

Collins, who won IAAF World Championship gold in a dramatic 100m race in Paris in 2003, finished second to Great Britain’s Mark Lewis-Francis by a margin of just one hundredth of a second in Glasgow last January and is hoping for a similarly strong performance when he lines up at the Emirates Arena.

“I’m really excited to open my 2013 season by competing at the new Emirates Arena. I finished second in a great 60m race in Glasgow last year and the British fans are always fantastic, so I’m sure it will be the same competing in front of another packed Glasgow crowd.

“I’ve ran some of my best ever 60m races in the last couple of years and I still think I’m capable of running quick times and mixing it with the world’s best athletes indoors. Racing in such a high quality meet will give me the perfect opportunity to start 2013 on a high.”

The Emirates Arena will host the British Athletics International match for the first time after 21 successful years at the historic Kelvin Hall, and Collins, who won 100m gold at the 2002 Commonwealth Games in Manchester, is looking forward to his first experience of Glasgow’s Commonwealth Park before it hosts the Games in 2014.

“The Commonwealth Games are special for me after winning gold in Manchester in 2002 so it will be great to compete for the Commonwealth Select team and also to get a glimpse of Glasgow’s new Commonwealth Park ahead of the 2014 Games.”

Collins will be joining World Indoor 4x400m relay champion Perri Shakes-Drayton (Chris Zah), Olympic high jump bronze medallist Robbie Grabarz (Fayyaz Ahmed), World Indoor pole vault bronze medallist Holly Bleasdale (Dan Pfaff), World Indoor long jump bronze medallist Shara Proctor (Rana Reider) and Scotland’s three-time Olympian Lee McConnell (Rodger Harkins) in Glasgow.
