King of the Tents Calypso Competition Set for Thursday 20th December

Once again the contest will involve the top calypsonians who produce some of the most humourous, witty and entertaining renditions during the appearances of the calypso tents. When the competition was first held in 2010, the crown was won by De Unexpected but he was defeated last year by a then very popular Rock-a-Fellow, with his 2011 major hit, “Stay in Your Lane”

This time around however, Unexpected and the other regular finalists who have included Lala, Provoker, Aba Lively, Honesty, Lil Willie and others, are already making it clear that a new king will be crowned when the contest is held in a few weeks.

Like in previous years, the competition will be judged by the public and not by a panel of judges. Calypso fans will be allowed to vote for their favourite calypsonians, via an online poll on MiyVue.com and also through a text platform to be provided by Telecommunications Company and sponsor, LIME.

One of the other unique aspects of competition is that the voting platforms will actually be opened a few days before the actual date of the show, to provide adequate time and opportunity for the fans of all selected finalists, to cast their ballots.

According to the Organizing Committee, the finalists will be selected live on radio early next week on ZIZ.

Calypso fans attending the contest on Thursday 20th December will also have the opportunity to win great prizes to be supplied by some of the event sponsors.

Founder and Producer of the contest, MiyVue.com’s owner, Mr. Val Henry, has indicated that they are this year working hard to try to increase the level of prize money for the winners; indicating that these are the calypsonians who every year really provide the entertainment for fans, when it comes to the calypso tents. Henry said however that it has been the tradition that once the semi-finalists have been selected, the tents have had a tendency to discontinue their appearances, and those who do not make it to the finals, have no other opportunity to perform during the height of the carnival.

This competition will again be streamed live on the internet and carried on ZIZ radio. It is scheduled to start at 9:00pm.
