Condor was launched by his party a few months ago and there had been much speculation about who would be found by the ruling SKNLP to vie against the PLP candidate. That answer was formally provided on Thursday night (3rd October, 2013), when Maynard was introduced to a select group of constituents during a ceremony held in the heart of the constituency.
The event, which some claim, was restricted to only those specifically invited by the party, was held at theTwilight Zone Conference Hall located at the Lime Kiln Industrial and Commercial Park. Given the claims that invitations were restricted, some residents of the constituency who describe themselves as members of the SKNLP have expressed concern that the opportunity to attend the event was not open to all members and the public at large.
Maynard has however rejected the claim that the meeting was restricted and was by invitation only. He told MiyVue.com that this was absolutelly not the case. He explained that the event was open to all constituents and the public at large, as was stated in a public announcement he said was issued through the local media.
Maynard has also indictaed that his team did not refuse admission to the event to anyone seeking to do so, as was claimed in some quarters.
“This is absolutely FALSE,” stated Maynard in an interview with MiyVue.com.
“In fact the venue hall held only about half the persons at the event. Because of its size we had made arrangements for two tents and chairs to be placed on the outside. These were also filled to capacity to the extent that there were a few hundred persons left standing beyond the tents,” stated the Maynard campaign team.
During his maiden political presentation, which lasted just under one hour, Maynard, who is the son of one of the special advisors of the leader of the SKNLP and Prime Minister of St. Kitts and Nevis, Dr. Denzil Douglas, promised constituents to deliver on a number of new initiatives but he also lashed out against his opponents, as he dwelled on the theme, “Winning Big for You”.
Listed in his many promises is a playfield for the people of Boyds Village and West Farm. He was equally committing to assist young people in areas of agriculture, fishing, computer training, land ownership, housing and landscaping.
Maynard also outlined some of the ways in which he has already contributed to the community and the country. He stated, “This burning desire to contribute to the country of my birth, as I have done in many ways before now through Calypso, community involvement, donations to numerous charitable causes, mentorship and motivational speeches for our youth, in cultural expressions like drama, has now brought me to a place where I have answered to a higher calling of service; that of Political Representation of the People of West Basseterre.”
The reigning calypso king of St. Kitts and Nevis and now politician added that “With God as my witness, I have decided to take up this challenge with a pureness of heart, with a genuine conviction to work on behalf of the people. My modus operandi is not to tear down one man, rather, it is to lift up a people.”
But not too long after speaking to the need to “lift up rather than tear down” the political hopeful could not resist making a carefully crafted swipe against those of the opposition party who have agreed to form a united front to contest the upcoming poll. He criticized them as temporary friends who have come together “out of convenience (and) because of their own individual weaknesses to seriously challenge the Labour Government Administration”
He also stated, “It is clear to me that the St. Kitts-Nevis Labour Party will be the one to weather this political storm to see sunshine once again because we are not bounded by men but by principles of a noble cause. It is also clear to me which construct is poised to self-destruct such that no one knows whether or not it will exist in the near future. It is clear to me that Constituency # 3 did not ask anyone to take up their votes and carry it across the political isle which we clearly and strongly voted against.”
“It is clear to me who will only be a part of any unity construct or any party unless they are anointed as Leader since it was not apparently forthcoming quickly enough in another dispensation,” Charged Maynard.
He said “It is clear to me who have become temporary friends out of convenience because of their own individual weaknesses to seriously challenge the Labour Government Administration.
Maynard assured the select group of Labourites, who included Douglas and other top executive embers, that “I have joined this Labour Movement because throughout my intense study of this political landscape, although there is still much to be perfected within the Labour party, and although there are improvements to be had within the realms of Government like constitutional reform, public sector reform, and integrity in public life reform, it is clear, beyond a reasonable doubt which political side has the purest intentions going forward
Maynard also acknowledged Attorney General Jason Hamilton and Osbert France, who many claim were asked to step aside to allow the calypsonian to become the candidate.
“They acceded to the call of service for the greater good of our country and they will no doubt be indispensable in our mission to win the hearts and minds of the good people of constituency #3, stated Maynard.
