Konris Maynard talks about crime and the youth in the federation

The West Basseterre Labour Party Candidate said that the issue of crime is very serious and should be a concern for every person, community and constituency.

The politician added that there is now more dedication and vigilance by law enforcement agents in their approach to reduce the number of violent and sometimes fatal incidents in the various communities.

“That is just the solution to a problem or the cure. We should now be looking at a prevention mechanism. Many years ago I sang a song called mommy and daddy where I had implored society and the community to become mommies and daddies,” Maynard said.

He added that what he believes is currently happening in St. Kitts and Nevis, is that there has been a lack of role models and the breakdown of past philosophies.

“Because of that breakdown, there have been other of influences around our young persons who are effectively sponges… If we don’t have that strong rooting of family or community support, then the glitter stuff may be an attraction and lead us down the wrong path,” Maynard said.

He added that as a young politician, he believes that a stronger emphasis be placed on family systems, especially in the single parent homes where there is most times an economic strain. .

“Most times when that happens, the parent sometimes focuses on other things and that moral support the child/children need is sometimes neglected and they end up with the wrong influences,” Maynard said.

He added that there is also a need to make the education system work for school attendees. “Not everybody will be academics… but there are some that will be more technical. We must ensure that our system doesn’t leave those people behind for idle hands to pick them up.”

Maynard also outlined that there is a need for more emphasis to be placed on the young male population, who sometimes find themselves at the foot of the law.

“In my view, in order to stem what would be this sense where young people are drawn to criminal activities… we need to place more emphasis on prevention; making sure that there are better homes and an education system,” the West Basseterre Candidate stated.
