LED Street lights to slash diesel imports

According to Lake, introducing the LED lighting solution came about last February when a consultant from the Republic of China on Taiwan analysed the best way the country could save on energy.

“So we did the analysis, and we realized that by replacing some 5,610 street lights, we would be able to save, annually, over 3,500 drums of diesel, just by moving from the incandescent tubes we have now to the LED light solution,” Lake explained.

He pointed out that some LED bulbs have been installed in several areas of downtown Basseterre.

“Some were installed on Cayon Street in the vicinity of Church Street. SKELEC is doing it. The objective now is, rather than purchase incandescent bulbs to replace the old bulbs, we are going to start the replacement with the LEDs,” Lake said

According to Lake, the second phase of the project would result in an additional set of lights, but he was unable to say how many LED bulbs would be installed during this phase.

“In the first phase, we changed 1,000 bulbs, but in the second phase, we haven’t got the numbers as yet… We would have to look at the numbers and see how many we will be changing out,” said Lake.

The Ministry of Energy, which is spearheading the renewable energy program on St. Kitts, indicated that an unexpected delay resulted in a late start to phase 2.

“The programme was actually rolled out late, because the bulbs took some time, about 60 days to be delivered to St. Kitts. They came in November, so we are finally rolling them out,” said Mr. Lake.

According to the Ministry of Energy, the bulb replacement project would be done over a two to three-year period, and the use of LED street lighting is likely to rise as new developments come on stream in the country.
