Lenin’s statue toppled in Ukrainian capital

Using ropes, metal bars and at least one sledgehammer, chanting demonstrators dragged the landmark statue to the ground, decapitating the stone head of the Bolshevik leader.

The scene was captured on cell phone footage by Artur Potapchik and uploaded to Instagram.

According to organizers, Sunday’s protest, which drew fundreds of thousands of Ukrainians, was the biggest since 2004’s pro-democracy Orange Revolution.

For the third weekend in a row, demostrators took to the streets to denounce the former Soviet republic’s move away from the European Union in favor of a trade deal with Moscow.

“This is a decisive moment when all Ukrainians have gathered here because they do not want to live in a country where corruption rules and where there is no justice,” Vitaly Klitschko, world heavyweight boxing champion-turned-politician, said in Kiev late Friday.

Vladamir Klitschko, Vitaly’s brother, and his fiancee, actress Hayden Panettiere, joined him at Friday’s demonstration.

“Your fight is not falling on deaf ears,” Panettiere told the cheering crowd. “The world will hear you.”

On Sunday, police in riot gear stood watch, protecting government buildings and supporters of President Viktor Yanukovych.
