Speaking exclusively with MiyVue.com on the topic of women’s development in her constituency, she disclosed that a plan was recently drafted called ‘progressive young Women’, which is aimed at providing women, specifically young mothers, with the requisite training that is need in order to develop skills for the world of work.
“It is to really enhance their self-esteem. Regardless of how pretty you think you look, once you get a talking to in a certain manner, then you realize you don’t have the level of confidence… We are running a programme to see how we can make them much more confident,” said Liburd.
Further, she disclosed that the programme is also focused on edifying the young women on “social graces”, which, according the outgoing minister of Gender Affairs, would assist the women in developing their skills for job interviews.
“Simple as it might sound, people are not aware that you are supposed to dress a particular way in order to go on a job interview, so you have to make the distinction. It may sound simple, but I know that a lot of the times women lose out because they are not aware of these things,” Liburd explained.
She has discovered, also, that some of the young mothers are limited to only the CXC and O’ Level examinations, which the minister said is limiting them from finding a suitable job.
“I found in going around that quite a number of young girls and young mothers who have one and two O’Levels; they are stuck, and so we want to offer them something where they can get three and four subjects…they are not going to be able to move on jobwise unless their skills are improved.
“It’s a programme that would build and really try to advance them in terms of their marketability for the job market and also to help them with their self-confidence,” she explained.
This is part of a strategic plan that the incumbent labour representative has laid out for the constituency that she represented for the past five years.
Currently, Liburd is running for a second term as the constituency #2 representative in the upcoming general elections, however, she is likely to receive a tough challenge from the young lawyer and representative from the People’s Action Movement in the constituency, Jonel Powell.
