The NGOs have confirmed that as part of their preparation to observe the poll on Monday 11th July, 2011, they have held discussions with other observer teams, including that from the Organization of American States, OAS, which was invited here by the Federal Government of St. Kitts & Nevis, to monitor and witness the proceedings leading up to, and on polling day.
Amongst the groups that comprise the local NGO group, are the Nevis Christian Council, Nevis Evangelical Association and the Nevis Branch of the Chamber of Industry and Commerce.
A spokesman for the group indicated that they have met with the Electoral Commission and Supervisor of Elections, and have also benefited from their own legal adviser. They say that as a result, they believe that its participation has assisted all and sundry to respect the law and remain calm and collective in exercising their franchise on polling day.
The local NGO group has expressed appreciation for the opportunity for discussions with the other bodies and is grateful to these bodies to have met with them with a view of addressing their concerns.
On Saturday 09th July, 2011, representatives of National NGOs of both St Kitts and Nevis met and had discussions with observers representing the Organisation of American States (OAS), and CARICOM.
The local NGO stated that “Notwithstanding the contentions concerning voter registration, both political parties in Nevis will be contesting the elections.”
