The injury occurred when Ware sprinted across the floor at full speed to challenge a 3-point shot by Duke’s Tyler Thornton. As he landed he rolled his ankle, transferring the impact of the hard landing to his right leg which caused a shear force fracture of the tibia bone. Part of the bone was left protruding from his lower leg.
As horrific as his injury looked, Ware was composed enough to encourage his teammates to beat Duke to advance to the Elite 8, which the team did in convincing fashion.
After the injury occurred, only one player, Louisville Cardinals forward Luke Hancock, rushed over to comfort his fallen teammate.
Coach Rick Pitino had to tell his players to go over to Ware and talk to him.
