Man Might Have Been Killed Because of Mistaken Identity Says Police

He was killed at his friend’s home in Mafeking Village, Mayaro on the morning of Thursday, 9th June, 2011.

According to Mayaro police, around 1.30 a.m. Gus was asleep on a couch in the living room while his friend, Jerome Dyer, was in a bedroom with his wife when two men barged into the house.

They saw Gus and opened fire.

The gunmen missed and Gus (now awake) attempted to flee by jumping out a window of the house. He fell ten feet down and landed in the bushes below, breaking his left leg.

The gunmen in the meantime searched through the house and found Dyer. They shot at him as well, hitting him in his left hand and waist. Dyer ran, leaving his wife behind and was able to escape the gunmen. His wife was unharmed.

The killers then walked out of the house, searched the yard and found Gus hiding in some bushes.

They opened fire on him again but this time they killed him on the spot.

A team of officers from the Mayaro and Sangre Grande Police Stations visited the scene yesterday and conducted investigations but the killers remained at large.

The murder toll according to the Express tally was 173 up to last night.

On June 10 last year the toll stood at 230.
