According to police officials, the man, Eustace Benjamin, was shot and killed by a police officer, at around 12:30am (Monday, 20th August, 2012). The victim is alleged to have attacked the police officer with a knife, and in response, it is said that the lawman responded by using his firearm, fatally shooting the victim.
A Police statement said that overnight, they responded to a robbery of a gas station in progress and was directed where the suspects ran. During the course of a building search for the suspects, an officer was assaulted with a knife.
“In the process of defending himself against the attacker, the assailant was fatally wounded,” said the statement. The investigation into this incident is continuing.
The death of Benjamin comes less than one week after the death of two men, one in Nevis and the other in St. Kitts. Police however are treating those incidents as homicides.
