Man stabbed on Central Street Friday afternoon

The incident is believed to have occurred around 5:15pm on Central Street, not too far away from where a special sports promotion was taking place, near the Indo Carib Shop and the BCA.

The altercation took place between two men, who according to eyewitnesses, were in an argument, followed by one allegedly hitting the other and then an alleged retaliation with a sharp instrument, which some described as a bottle.

The victim of the injury was said to have been slashed several times in parts of the body, including his back. Blood could be seen on the side walk and on one vehicle where the victim tried to balance himself.

However, at first, according to eyewitnesses, it all seemed so trivial but it was only about 30 minutes after when bystanders realized that the matter was much more serious than originally thought.

The man could be seen on the side walk bending over and looking somewhat dazed and eventually falling to the ground. Luck was on side as an off duty nursing-assistant happened to be in the vicinity and immediately offered medical assistance. At times it appeared as though he was about to lose consciousness but the hard working nursing assistant constantly kept him alert. Were it not for her intervention, the situation could have been much worse this evening.

Many in the crowd that had gathered by then were very critical about the lengthy delay in the EMS arrival. It was later learnt that one of the ambulances actually came from as far as Sandy Point, some 10 miles to the west of Basseterre, and arriving there seconds after the other ambulance which was said to have been on another emergency call in the east of Basseterre, in Frigate Bay.

Police became involved after one senior officer happened to be passing by and stopped to offer assistance and thereafter calling the Basseterre Police station for their investigation.

Some who said they witnessed the altercation, claimed that the man who is accused of doing the stabbing was somewhat provoked by the victim. This however, has not been verified and there were other accounts that suggested that the need to escalate the incident was not warranted.

The investigations are just beginning but according to those present, the man who is alleged to have done the stabbing is known widely by the alias, “Bobby” and is a frequent worker with one of the major sports associations.

The name of the other man was not known at the time of this report.
