Off to a late start, the show, which coincided with the first ever Steel Pan Festival, saw the riveting performances of nine Junior Calypsonians, namely, Akedo Nisbett, Shandaliah Henry, Joel Henry, Ta-jaroh Stapleton, Janniah Roach, Devaughn Browne, hajunee Gumbs, Leonardo Robinson, Shomari Mitchell.
The 2013 Monarch “Lil Taj” encountered several difficulties with the back-up band while performing. This resulted in the former king pausing a few times during his performance.
Although the reigning prince, Ta-jaroh Stapleton, didn’t retain his crown, several patrons that attended the competition on Tuesday night expressed that the next generation of Calypsonians could be emerging from the competition.
“I have said it time and time again. We need to keep these same children involved in the art form. Give them support, courage and guidance so that this aspect of our tradition continues to live,” one patron said.
She added that for the past several years attending the show, a number of the new faces that appear every year do not return. “There was one particular boy back in 2012 that sang real good, but I never saw him back.”
Meanwhile, in the new Junior King’s song called ‘I pray” it dealt with the different aspects of the political leadership in St. Kitts and Nevis. While bravely speaking about several political figures, Sookie received a powerful round of applause from the audience.
The song also pleaded with citizens and residents to pray for their political leaders to help them to achieve the wisdom required to lead the nation in a positive direction.
The First Runner-up position went to former Monarch, King Leo, singing ‘Politics and Youth’ while talented songstress Lady Niah was adjudged Second Runner-up.
