Basseterre, St. Kitts, Tuesday, 5th October, 2021, (MyVue Teachers in St. Kitts & Nevis have been lauded by Minister of Education, Jonel Powell, for the personal sacrifices they make in the cause of education.

Speaking on the occasion of World Teachers’ Day, on Tuesday, 5th October, Powell explained that teachers give much of their time and expertise, while also using their personal resources to ensure that their students are given the best instructions possible.

He called on the nation to show appreciation for the work undertaken by teachers and said that today presents an ideal opportunity to celebrate educators for the multifaceted roles that they have taken on, especially in the midst of COVID-19.

“COVID-19 continues to threaten the delivery of face-to-face instructions,” said Powell, but this has not stopped teachers from using innovative means to ensure that the needs of students are met.

Recognizing that face-to-face instructions put the life of teachers and students at risk, he called on all stakeholders to work towards creating a safer environment for educators and their students.

Despite the many challenges, said Powell, teachers are still coming out of their comfort zones to teach students online.

More and more teachers are accepting the call for resilience and creativity, to deliver relevant and quality education, in an environment dominated by Coronavirus, added Powell.

As part of his activities for Teachers’ Day, the Education Minister joined global Ministers of Education from Ecuador, Cote d’Ivoire, and Cambodia, to address a United Nations forum organized by UNESCO, the ILO, and Unicef, in commemoration of World Teachers’ Day 2021.

They presented perspectives on education and teaching in the Covid-19 pandemic, highlighting the soon-to-be-established National Teaching Council in the drive to professionalize the teaching force on St. Kitts and Nevis.

“Happy World Teachers’ Day to the hardworking, caring, resilient and dedicated teachers of our Federation. They are truly at the heart of our education recovery,” stated the Minister.
