St. Kitts, June 19, 2018: The Ministry of Education was once again the recipient of a bundle of school supplies, donated by 10-year-old Sydni Patrick of California, on Tuesday, 19th June.
Sydni, whose parents are natives of St. Kitts, felt distressed after seeing the damages left in the wake of Hurricanes Irma and Maria. She asked her parents how they could best assist children that had to leave their island and go to school on another as a result of damages to their school(s) after the storms passed.
After discussing she and her parents decided that their efforts would be more effective in ensuring that students are adequately prepared for school when they arrived on the island. Sydni then created a poster and distributed it throughout her school, Redwood Shore Elementary. The donation drive collected boxes of school supplies for the displaced students. The Items which were subsequently handed over to the Ministry included notebooks, pens, crayons backpacks which were all collected during the drive.
On hand to receive the supplies from Sydni’s father, Mr. Rossi Patrick, were the Minister of Education, Hon. Shawn Richards and the Permanent Secretary of Education, Mr. William Hodge, both of whom expressed gratitude to Mr. Patrick for his family’s generosity and particularly that of Sydni’s.
“I want to say a very special thank you to your daughter for coming to the assistance of these students; you have quite a remarkable young lady. Not many persons at the age of 10 would have taken such an initiative, to assist other students who are in need. She has done so, and this says that she is a caring young lady who wants to see others have an education that is uninterrupted as much as possible regardless of the circumstances,” expressed Minister Richards.
Fortunately, many students that were placed within the Federation from around the region following the passing of the storms have already returned to their homes. The Ministry intends to distribute these supplies to those who are still here and other students and schools which are in need.
