MOFA serves as a critical conduit of communication for foreign countries and their nationals in St. Kitts and Nevis

Basseterre, St. Kitts, September 06, 2021 (SKNIS): In the event of a disaster, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MOFA) in St. Kitts and Nevis serves as a critical conduit of communication for foreign countries and their citizens or nationals who reside in the twin-island Federation.

“Through our Missions, there are persons who live here who are from countries that we consider to be allies of St. Kitts and Nevis and so we serve as a conduit, as a sort of liaison between St. Kitts and Nevis and those countries in the event that we have a disaster, and those countries are interested in what is happening with their people in St. Kitts and Nevis,” said Kervin Lloyd, representative of the Foreign Assistance Sub-Committee of the National Disaster Management Committee, while appearing on the September 1 edition of ‘Working for You.’

Mr. Lloyd said that MOFA works assiduously to keep the lines of communication open.

“We try our best to communicate with those countries. If those countries are overly concerned as to what is happening with their people, we try to be the first at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs to assure them that their people are [safe].”

He noted that the Federation is renowned for its outstanding generosity and hospitality.

“We have a very warm practice in St. Kitts and Nevis of treating people coming in from overseas, who live here but were born overseas – we have a knack for treating them like our own especially in times of disasters and when there is a need for assistance,” he said. “As long as you are here, we don’t care if you are a Kittitian, Nevisian or wherever you’re from, as long as you’re here if you are in need of help especially in terms of crisis, in St. Kitts and Nevis we always rise to the occasion.”
