Mother and daughter collaborate to write children novel

Jewel Amethyst Daniel and her daughter Lynette Martin put their hearts together to pen the novel “Zapped”, which brings a cross over between micro-biology and children fiction.

In a simple launching ceremony at TDC mall on Tuesday (23rd December), Daniel told the media that the occasion marked the launch of her fourth book, but this one is very special to her, because she was assisted by her daughter.

“It is my first children’s novel and it was published with my daughter Lynette Martin, who is eleven years old. She began writing it when she was around eight years old and we got it published when she was eleven and it’s published by Caribbean Reeds, which is owned by Carol Otley Mitchell.”

The occasion was also marked by a donation of a quantity of books to the National Library in St Kitts, Daniel disclosed.

The book features four youngsters, who are all named after her children, were at a fictional museum and one seemed very “mischievous”, she related.

Not giving away much of the novel, Daniel said that the mischievous young man wandered off and was soon followed by his fellow siblings “who touched something” which they were prohibited from handling and as such they were shrunk (Zapped) into an animal cell and while they tried to escape the cell, it took them on an adventure.

“It is really an adventurous adventure… but eventually they escaped the cell in the end, but what you have, while reading is that kids are learning about the cell. Cell Biology is something that is dear to me because I have a PhD in Biology; I worked as a cell biologist.”

Currently she teaches cell biology, noting that it is a difficult area for most persons to understand, but if one can have the children grasp the concept at a very young age, then it makes it accessible to all.

ZappedShe noted that it was her daughter who got her involved in writing the book because she was very persuasive in reading the adult novels her mother wrote.

“I published my first book back in 2009, a marriage of convince and Lynette after seeing it in the book store was all excited and she wanted to be a part of it and be part of the writing. I told her she can’t read the book… so she asked me when she can read the book, I said when your 18, she said no 16…”

Adding that “…she doesn’t take no for an answer and she said what about when I am 14 and I’m like nah, so she asked if she can write a book with me.”

The eleven year old said that she is very happy, but still in shock as she has contributed to the publishing of the novel.

“I’m happy, but also I feel like it can’t be real. Usually I wouldn’t expect myself to be writing a book and I guess my mom was an inspiration as she got me to read and write.”

She is looking forward to partnering with her mom to publish more books.

Zapped is one of a series of books that the duo will release with the remaining novels expected to be available in the New Year.
