While there is much interest in both the Power and Groovy segments of the competition, many fans are showing interest in the Power category and are wondering if the reigning King, “Mr. Hype” can withstand the onslaught that is to be expected from the other top guns.
Hype will be banking on his hard hitting song, “Chook” to take him through to another victory, after only making his calypso debut last year.
The reigning Power Soca Monarch says he is very confident about retaining the crown he won in 2013.
Speaking exclusively with MiyVue.com on Tuesday, Bjorn “Mr. Hype” Bassue, revealed that the standard for this year’s competition has risen tremendously and he will bring everything out of the box with “a lot of hype” in order not be dethroned.
“There is never anything that Mr. Hype or Team Hype brings that is identical to anybody, or (anything) else (that) has ever been seen or produced. “
Further he said that Friday’s performance will have a lot of creativity, originality and, lots of excitement which he is known to produce on the big nights of competition.
The soft spoken Bassue, boldly told Miyvue.com that there is no doubt in his mind that he would win the competition.
“I’m just waiting to be crowned really. I’m really excited about Friday, actually I wish today was Friday. I feel very confident and there is no doubt in my mind that I have something prepared to present that without a doubt will win over the judges and the people who come out to support the show.”
When asked who is seen as the biggest challenger to him retaining the Soca Monarch crown, Hype revealed that if there was a twin Hype that would be me competition.” In other words…no one.
“My main focus is winning over the judges, winning over the crowd, making sure that I hit every mark on the criteria and just giving a performance that everybody is going to love and remember from now until next year.”
He won the 2014 crown in his debut competition with his catchy performance to the tune “Wuk it” but this time around he could face stiff competition from last year’s second place finalist, Jonas Bagnall and new comer to the Soca arena Suga Bowl.
With a big performance planned for the final night, he said come 2015, several of the artistes will be writing songs on him.
“I think every artiste brings something different to the table, when it comes to Mr. Hype and what he brings to the table, I don’t see anybody that could compete or compare with what I bring.”
However, the defending Soca Monarch indicated that this year the Soca music is much improved this time around as compared to previous years.
“The artistes are really stepping up their game and it’s not just music anymore that appeals or relates to just Kittitians and Nevisians but its music that people all over can appreciate regionally and even internationally.”
The origin for the “Chook” entry, he said, speaks to protest against bosses who have their employees working on J’ouvert morning.
“I’m basically letting my boss know that there is no way that I am coming to work J’ouvert morning and J’ouvert is something that everybody looks forward to and nobody wants to go to work on that day… it sends a clear message that the only work I will be working, is on some body woman,” stated the soca king.
