Nevis’ Mr. Kool wins first Mr. Caribbean contest in Dominica

Tyson dominated the contest, winning Best Formal Wear, Best Costume and Best Swim Wear.

The event had the participation of seven contestants who hailed from Nevis, Dominica, Anguilla, Barbados, The Bahamas, St. Vincent & the Grenadines, and Guyana. The eight delegate from St. Lucia, pulled out due to illness.

Taking First Runner-up position was the delegate from St. Vincent, who also picked up the prize for Best Talent, while Barbados’ Ronnie Morris secured Second Runner-up position and Best Interview.

Though organizers have expressed satisfaction with the competition it was largely frowned upon by many in the Dominican community who elected not to attend, leaving many empty seats. They have also had to fight off charges that the show was one involving and promoting homosexuality, which has been strongly rejected by the organizers.

Speaking to the media in Dominica, after his victory, the newly crowned Mr. Caribbean, Kadeem Tyson defended the competition, saying “that pageantry was not meant for women only.”

He told that “It’s not a gay show, I am not gay. I am just clearing the air right there so if you guys think it’s a gay show; it’s not a gay show. It’s a male pageant not only females could do pageantry. It really paid off, I had so much family issues and stuff but this was motivation for me, I want to thank the Dominican people for the warm welcome, I am a bigger role model now.”

Tyson added that he intended to share his experience back home in Nevis and is already looking forward to return to Dominica in 2015 to hand over his crown to the next winner.

Tyson qualified for participation in the contest after he won the Mr. Kool Contest during the 2013 Culturama celebrations in Nevis.
