Bishop Richards arrived at approximately 11:35 am following a delay of his flight prior to leaving Antigua.
A happy Kenneth Richards and family member were greeted by a welcoming committee, charged with the celebrations of the new bishop. The Bishop was ordained yesterday, (8th February), in Antigua, following his stint as Vicar General of the Archdiocese of Kingston, Jamaica.
They were also greeted by hundreds of flag waving students from the Immaculate Catholic Conception School, which is owned by the local Catholic Church. His arrival at the downtown location of the Co-Cathedral caused a slight traffic jam during the busy lunchtime period in Basseterre.
Saturday November 19, 2011, the Holy Father, Pope Benedict XVI announced, in Rome, the election of Msgr. Kenneth Richards, as the new Bishop of the Diocese of St. John’s-Basseterre.
The welcome celebrations of Bishop Richards will continue later today when a Welcome and Thanksgiving Mass will be held at the Catholic Co Cathedral at 5:30 pm.
The Governor General Dr. Sir Cuthbert Sebastian, Prime Minister Dr. Denzil Douglas, Minister of Ecclesiastical Affairs, Marcella Liburd are all expected to join other invited guest from the local church and parish community in welcoming the new Bishop at the service.
The Roman Catholic Diocese of St. John’s-Basseterre comprises the islands of Antigua and Barbuda, St. Kitts and Nevis, Anguilla, Montserrat and the British Virgin Islands.
Also arriving on the same flight with the Bishop was the Prime Minister of Dominica who has arrived ahead of the 72nd Meeting of the ECCB Monetary Council at the ECCB Headquarters
