New foundation gets tangible support from Digicel

The Whole Again Foundation was recently registered and is currently headed by its president, Patrick Williams, who lost a leg following a freak accident in a building in downtown Basseterre last April.

“I’ve tried to become an active and productive citizen once again,” Williams said, as he explained, “…I should use my own personal experiences in a positive way to assist the plight of other amputees, thus the idea was born for the Whole Again Foundation.”

In a brief ceremony at Digicel’s retail center in The Circus, Basseterre, the company’s corporate representatives handed over a DigiHome Phone, capable of local, regional and international calls, text messaging and several other features. Digicel also donated EC$1000 to the Foundation.

“We are very thankful to Digicel,” Williams stated.

He said, “The Foundation is looking at improving the welfare of amputees by providing mentoring to positively affect their physical, spiritual, in some instances financial, to enhance their wellbeing, so that they can become active and independent citizens once again.”

He explained that in the short-term, the Foundation will focus on providing amputees with equipment, such as crutches, walkers and bathroom bar wheelchairs, but they are also looking ahead at more ambitious services.

“We have a seven-point program that we’re still discussing. One of the things, we would have like to get off the ground is a ‘Star Bus’ that would provide wheel chair access, a service that amputees could request, transportation upon request, to take them around,” said Williams, who admits that it is an expensive proposition that will have to be examined as the Foundation grows and develops.

Williams is now hoping that “corporate St. Kitts and Nevis will step forward to assist the Foundation”.

The Foundation will have two types of memberships – first is full membership to all amputees in St. Kitts and Nevis, and second, honorary membership,  “from volunteers, other stakeholders, private sector organizations and so on”, Williams informed.

Also present at the hand-over ceremony were Tishanna Jeffers of Digicel; Anthony Wiltshire, WAF vice president; Percival Hanley, treasurer; Mrs. Pat Williams, secretary and Mickey Winthrop, director.
