New-look India wins toss and bowls in 1st T20 against NZ

JAIPUR, India (AP) — Rohit Sharma won his first toss as India’s new T20 captain and chose to bowl against World Cup finalist New Zealand in their series opener on Wednesday.

The three-match series marks a new era in Indian cricket after a poor performance at the T20 World Cup. Rahul Dravid takes over as coach from Ravi Shastri, while Sharma leads on the field with Virat Kohli rested for the series.

The new-look squad sees an influx of Indian Premier League stars — batters Ruturaj Gaikwad and Shreyas Iyer, bowlers Avesh Khan and Harshal Patel, and all-rounder Venkatesh Iyer.

Dew at the Sawai Mansingh Stadium in Jaipur favors the chasing side.

For New Zealand, Kane Williamson and Kyle Jamieson are rested from this T20 series.

Tim Southee leads the Black Caps in the place of Williamson.
