In line with this objective the Department of Social Services and Community Development has embarked on a mission to provide year round activities for older persons in the community.
To help bring life to this vision the Department recently hosted a special concert, under the theme, “Good Health Adds Years To Your Life”, held at the Sandy Point Community Centre on Sunday 29thApril.
The concert which was co-sponsored by the Ministry of Health and the Pan American Health Organization (PAHO) in commemoration of World Health Day featured several local artistes who sang, danced and shared other talents with their elders.
With one successful event behind them, the Department of Social Services and Community Development is now preparing for an activity in the third quarter of 2012 which is slated to be a picnic for older persons.
One other meaningful program that has been ongoing by the Department is related to the recognition given to those citizens who attain the important milestone of 100 years.
The latest citizen to have benefited was Ms. Janet Akers who on Sunday April 29th celebrated her 100 birthday. In thanksgiving to God for her longevity and many other blessings, Ms. Akers began her day at the Wesleyan Holiness Church. The spirit filled service was also attended by His Excellency the Governor General Sir Cuthbert Sebastian, Dr. Denzil Douglas, Prime Minister of the Federation, Marcella Liburd, Minister with responsibility for Senior Citizens and Senior Minister Dr. Timothy Harris.
A special luncheon was also hosted for Ms. Zakers at the St. Kitts Marriott Hotel.
