In an interview with Miyvue.com, head of the Traffic Department, Inspector Cromwell Henry, explained that the changes were designed to improve the flow of traffic in certain areas and also to reduce hazards on the affected streets.
The new protocols are as follows:
Brombill Street (east of Fulton’s Bakery) in Newtown will see traffic now flowing northwards only, from the Bay Road to George Street.
On upper Delisle Street, traffic will now travel northwards only, from Liverpool Row, to Prince’s Street; while on George Street, between Stainforth Street and East Independence Square Street, traffic will flow in both directions.
The police official also said that with Monday being the first day of the changes, there were motorists who failed to comply with the new rules, using the excuse of not being aware of the modifications.
He therefore urged the public to comply with the regulations as there are signs posted in the relevant areas.
One future change now under consideration, said Henry, will affect Sprott Street, in Central Basseterre. The plan said the officer is to make Sprott Street a one way avenue, with vehicles travelling only southwards. No final decision has been made on this recommendation but when action is to be taken adequate notice will be provided, promised the official.
