No Rest For ‘The Axeman’ During Holidays

He will also attend the RJR Sports Foundation Sportsman and Sportswoman of the Year award ceremony on January 10 for which he has been nominated.

Walters told The Gleaner that he was always happy to be home and that while here he would be doing some hard training under the guidance of his father, Job Walters, who runs a gym in Anchovy, St James.

Despite this being the festive season, it will not be a time of rest for Walters as Job told The Gleaner that he was happy to have Nicholas in Jamaica and that he had already put him to work.

“Nicholas is overweight now, so he will be doing a lot of running and gym work to start him on the road to fitness,” he said.

“The only days off he may get are Christmas and Boxing Day, and even on those days, he will at least have to do some running. We are taking this next fight seriously and he is going to be ready for it.”

Nicholas said he was thrilled to hear that his next opponent had been named as he now has an immediate goal to work towards in 2014.

He shared his distress over having had only one fight this year – a successful title defence against Mexican Alberto Garza in Corpus Christi, Texas, on November 9. He won that fight by a fourth-round technical knockout.

Under a new promotional contract with Bob Arum and his promotional company Top Rank, Walters is guaranteed at least two fights each year, and the expectation now is that Arum will enter into discussions with Vetyeka’s team and that a venue and date for the fight will be agreed on early in the New Year.

Walters will be in Jamaica until late January.
