The alarm bell was raised when rumours started to spread throughout the island that Prime Minister David Thompson had died. However, new reports have indicated that though he remains hospitalized in the United States, up to 8:00pm last night, the Barbados leader was still alive.
The ailing Thompson was re-admitted to the New York Presbyterian Hospital on Monday, 4th October. Some reports stated that he had entered into a coma and was, “At death’s door”.
It was only recently on 25th September that the prime minister returned to Barbados after treatment in the United States and last week he re-shuffled his Cabinet, a move some said, was to clear the way for a succession plan, in the event of his passing.
According to a well known Barbadian political advisor, Mr. Harley Henry, “The persistent rumours of the prime minister’s death are absolutely not true”.
Henry told the Nation Newspaper of Barbados that, the prime minister is very much alive. “Not well, but very much alive. In fact, his condition is no different than it was yesterday,” said Henry.
Henry is said to be with the prime minister in Manhattan, said that Mr. Thompson is due back in Barbados sometime next week. In his absence the country is being led by his deputy, Mr. Freundel Stuart, who is acting as prime minister.
Prime Minister Thompson is 48 years old.
