OECS Director General to turn spotlight on international issues affecting federation

The lecture, which is being organized by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, will be held under the theme “Mature Regionalism in Action: The Role of Foreign Policy in Advancing OECS Economic Union”.

Dr. Jules will be visiting the Federation for the first time since he succeeded Dr. Len Ishmael as Director General of the OECS and will provide an opportunity for the general public to engage with him on pertinent issues related to regional integration and OECS Economic Union.

The Acting Permanent Secretary in the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Astona Browne, who is also the OECS Commissioner of St. Kitts and Nevis, explained that “the theme of the lecture is quite timely given the numerous developments that are to take place both regionally and internationally to give greater prominence to the agenda of Small Island Developing States that would allow them to more effectively address their challenges in relation to small size, high indebtedness and vulnerability.

In this, the “International Year of SIDS” as declared by the United Nations, it is vitally important that we take every opportunity to showcase the achievements made through regional integration as a strategy for advancing the social and economic wellbeing of the people of our region as well as to work together to coordinate activities to ensure that an OECS perspective is meaningfully reflected in the various processes to devise a global pact on Climate Change and the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) post-2015.

OECS Economic Union and regional integration in general, remains an essential platform for member states to pool their resources and sovereignty by providing the political, constitutional and economic framework as well as the theatre for achieving national as well as regional goals.

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs has issued an invitation to members of the general public to attend what they promise will be an informative and stimulating lecture that will be held on Wednesday, 6th August 2014 at the Old Boy’s School.
