OECS Education Ministers Meeting to Focus on Integration

Minister Carty explained that the broad objective of the meeting is to come up with strategies that would teach young people of the Region how to tolerate and appreciate diversity as well as communicate and develop interpersonal skills that would be required in an era of free movement and globalization.

The Minister said the meeting would facilitate sharing of ideas to assist participants in filling the gaps that are emerging in the education sector and fashion an appropriate system that helps to bridge those gaps.

Referring specifically to the Federation of St. Kitts and Nevis Minister Carty said the Ministry of Education has been focusing on Technical and Vocational Education Training (TVET) as it seeks to match the needs of employers with trained skilled workers to the mutual satisfaction of both groups.

“It’s about ensuring greater articulation between our programmes at the secondary school and college levels and our Advanced Vocational Education Centre (AVEC), ensuring that we fill gaps in the employment sector by giving our people a better chance at acquiring the skills to meet those opportunities,” Minister Carty said.

The Minister added that some of the main issues he hoped to see addressed at the meeting were School Leadership, Teacher Recruitment and Professional Development – all priority matters for this Federation.

He commented that one of the challenges in the region was the lack of harmonization of Education policies. He informed that just over ten years ago there was a promulgation of an OECS-Wide model Education Act which was passed in St. Kitts and Nevis and which has done a lot to distill some of the common issues which are rampant in the region.

Minister Carty emphasized that in discussing the OECS Education Sector Strategy participants would also address broader issues of the International Community such as the Millennium Development Goals and The United Nations Human Rights Convention.

The opening ceremony of the Meeting takes place on the evening of  Tuesday May 22 with the actual meetings taking place on Wednesday 23rd and Thursday 24th.
