Basseterre, St. Kitts, 10th May, 2018 (MyVueNews.com) – ADeB Consultants Ltd. and the Public Works Department have settled on new designs for a pier and breakwater at the Old Road Fisheries Complex, which they say would not result in the damage caused by previous storms.

The breakwater will include boulders up to 12 tons for the protection of the pier, which ADeB said will have a stronger construction design.

Speaking to fisherfolk of the area, as well as representatives from various government ministries, ADeB Consultants Managing Director Martell Lee said his engineering company will deliver on the requirements.

Although the project contractor has not been selected as yet, officials said the selected contractor will be held to the highest standards and will be accountable for work they carry out.

Minister Lindsay Grant, the parliamentary representative for Constituency #4 that includes Old Road, said the concerns of the fisherfolk was important, and that the government will have to find millions of dollars to do the necessary work.

Grant said, “We felt that the economic environment in Old Road and this constituency is so important; the fisherfolk are so important to this constituency that it was very important for us to make sure that we find the necessary resources, that we find the necessary money to again to do rehabilitation work down here.”

The main concern of the fisherfolk was the sustainability of the breakwater and pier. Rehabilitation work had been done on several occasions but failed to withstand severe sea conditions.
