Opposition demands urgent sitting of Parliament or face street protest

PNM and Opposition Leader Dr. Keith Rowley told a news conference that if the government fails to convene a session of Parliament, he has already written to the Police seeking permission “to stage a demonstration of citizens outside the office of the prime minister on Thursday morning”.

He said citizens would march to the official residence of President George Maxwell Richards “to present to him a signed petition on behalf of traumatised citizens…who seek protect from the vulgar and corrupt action of the Kamla Persad Bissessar government”.

In addition, Rowley said the PNM is calling for the immediate resignation of Attorney General Anand Ramlogan and Justice Minister Herbert Volney for their roles in the passage of the Administration of Justice (Indictable Offences) Act 2011 which takes effect from January 2, next year.

The new legislation replaces the Preliminary Enquiry Act and negates the need for a preliminary enquiry to be held in relation to matters filed indictably.
