Speaking on Issues on Wednesday, Dr. Douglas said the country’s youths are “dying and bleeding; the country is hurting and in crisis”.
He continued, “Today, I call on Dr. Harris to recognize that the country is in crisis… The government has a responsibility… in finding the solution to the unprecedented crime wave in our country today.”
The opposition leader proposed that Prime Minister Harris immediately organize a national crime forum, or summit, of all stakeholders within the country to find solutions to the crime problem that has been plaguing the country and youth.
He indicated that the forum/summit should comprise of groups such as the government, the opposition, youth organizations, Chamber of Industry and Commerce, security forces and civil society.
Douglas reminded the general public that crime is a national issue, and it will take the effort of everyone to curb the problems within our societies. He further stated that playing the blame game won’t solve the issue, possibly referring to statements from the current Team Unity Government, which has pointed out that the escalation of violent gun crimes, in particular, started under the Labour Party administration.
Douglas contended, “It will take all of us to fix it, and so no blaming of any one entity or group or party will make us safer as a nation and as a people.”
In recent weeks, a number of persons have fallen victim to the rise in criminal and violent activities. Douglas took the opportunity to convey deep condolences to the families of such victims.
