Speaking for the parliamentary opposition, the St. Kitts-Nevis Labour Party, Senator Carty outlined a three-pronged approach he said the Government was using against its citizens. He accused the Team Unity administration of using Fascism, Totalitarianism and McCarthyism in its quest to govern the country.
Speaking on Freedom FM during the Wednesday afternoon talk program, Issues, Carty claimed that these matters were being widely talked about in the public domain. According to Carty, “As to the point of Fascism, this is the conversation you hear on the street, as a consequence of what we see happening in the country now.”
In an attempt to suppress opposition views, Carty purports that the Government embarked early on a campaign of victimization, a claim that is not new, except for the connections now being made to Fascist tendencies. He said, “People are being fired from every single layer of government, and in non-governmental organizations, recently, there were firings in NHC, from the Electoral Office and in other places of government.”
He described the prime minister as exhibiting the traits of totalitarianism, where, for example, persons are hired to do the bidding of the leader or government, he said, as he suggested that a certain talk show host was hired “to abuse ordinary citizens”.
The senator, who served as Minister of Education, et al, under the Denzil Douglas led Labour administration, said such was not the case when he was in office.
“Anybody who wanted to oppose Dr. Douglas and the Labour Party could call in and voice their opinions. Nobody ever threatened to shut down the radio station,” Senator Carty said, not indicating the media house to which he was referring. But, he continued, “There are two radio stations in the country that are being threatened with closure, and those are the stations, which dared to permit people into their studios and talk about what’s happening in the country.”
Senator Carty went on to accuse the Government of applying tactics of McCarthyism, when, according to him, the attorney general called on the director of public prosecution to resign. Carty stated that the government wants “to install in the Office of the DPP someone like… who would do the bidding of the government at a political level”. This, he said, “would corrupt the Justice System”.
Meanwhile, Carty continues to contend that the prime minister is “deliberately positioning members of the Harris family in key institutions of government”. The senator stated, “You’ll find the Harris family in charge of the Development Bank. You will find them positioned on the Board of the National Bank. You will find them in charge of the Registrar’s Office in the High Court. You will find them on the Social Security Board, and recently, you would have heard that one of the sisters was hired as a consultant to the government.”
While the senator did not explain that some of the positions mentioned were actually effected during the Labour Party’s period in government, Carty concluded that such examples demonstrate that the prime minister and his government are on a “fast track” to create a “totalitarian state or a fascist state”.
