PAM picks candidate to run against Douglas but remains mum on naming him

However, has learnt that the party has already selected its candidate to challenge Dr. Douglas, but that person would not be unveiled until early in the New Year, said the Political Leader of PAM and Member of Parliament for Sandy Point, Shawn Richards.

The PAM leader indicated to in an exclusive interview on Monday (15th December), that they have found the person who would be running in that constituency.

Richards indicated that even though the candidate has not been launched, he has already been doing the necessary groundwork in the constituency.

However, when asked how confident he is, in that person winning the seat, he noted that it is a very difficult task to be done as that area is primarily Labour.

“Let us be realistic, we know that the constituency Number 6 seat is a traditional Labour seat and it’s going to be very difficult for anyone to unseat the incumbent at this particular time.”

When the poll was held in 2010, the PAM candidate on that occasion was Junie “Scrape” Hodge he managed only 179 votes compared to a massive 1,905 scored by Douglas.

The result was not much different five years earlier in 2004 when the PAM challenger was Jonelle Rawlins, with 120 votes and Douglas with 1,683.

Interestingly, Rawlins is the wife or former wife of Dr. Terrance Drew, one of the new candidates of the Labour Party, running in Constituency Number Eight against PAM’s Deputy Leader, Eugene Hamilton.

Going even further back in the political history of the country and the constituency, Labour has always easily won that seat which was delivered to Douglas on a “silver political platter” in 1989 by the late Charles E Mills, who ran in the constituency for a number of elections.

It is the safest seat for the ruling Labour Party and no candidate has had to work hard for a victory. The heart of the constituency is St. Paul’s, the home of one of Labour stalwarts, Robert Bradshaw.

Other districts included are Parsons, Dieppe Bay, Newton Ground and Saddlers.
