Partnership: a key focus for the Agriculture Open Day

This pronouncement came from Executive Officer Vere Harris, who told the media that for 2015, they invited partnering organizations such as the Tourism Ministry, Social Security and the Commercial Banks, to showcase possibilities for famers.

He indicated that they also used the event as a means of promoting small organizations in the Federation.

“The day is basically focusing on the various aspects that are related to agriculture… We also wanted to promote the small business, where we wanted everyone to be part of, and to promote their business,” Harris said.

According to the organizer, the turnout of farmers for the event is larger than 2014, positing that “this is one of the most successful years of farmer turn out”.

He indicated that the event saw a number of representatives from the co-operatives making an appearance, along with livestock farmers.

“We had a larger turnout than we expected. For me it is better than the year before, because different associations are coming together. We have the Farmer’s Co-operatives, which is a group of farmers coming together and you have the individual farmers,” he added.

The department is also using the event to promote the replanting of coconut trees around the island, as many are diseased or have died.

“We have been having a loss of coconut trees in St. Kitts, so the Department of Agriculture, along with some other organizations, brought in some coconut trees. We are selling them here,” Harris explained.

Meanwhile, Agriculture Officer Raquel Esquire told the media that for this year, the Department of Agriculture decided to showcase the partnerships and linkages between governmental organizations, as well as private entities.

“We understand that agriculture is involved in every aspect of our lives. Without food there is not life, so it is involved in banking and every single area of life,” she said.

This is evident, she said, in the collaboration between the Department of Agriculture and the Ministry of Tourism to stage ‘Restaurant Week’.

The theme for the event is ‘Embracing Agriculture and its Partners’.
