told Miyvue.com that the activities were in accordance with highlighting a significant milestone in Peace Corp existence since its inception on March 1st, 1961 by the late President of the United States, John F. Kennedy.
She explained that the Peace Corp Volunteers have contributed tremendously to the education system in the Federation since many of them are attached to schools.
Ms. Huggins added that the Peace Corp has contributed greatly to the social aspect of the nation via the establishment of libraries, and regular parenting classes.
“The human-building capacity has been one of the many areas that the Peace Corp has excelled in,” she remarked.
“However,” continued the Associate Director,
“with 17 on St. Kitts and 3 on Nevis, their task is not only limited to assisting the schools but they also can be deployed to offer training to members of Non-Governmental Organizations (NGO’s) or even to help with projects that can benefit our communities.”
She concluded by expressing congratulations to the Peace Corp Organization on such an achievement.
Meanwhile, also speaking to Miyvue.com, one volunteer, Ms. Kim Clever, revealed that she has found that the lifestyle on the island is very different to her expectations.
“The lifestyle here is not typical to the stereotypes that I have heard about, the culture is different and one that should be accepted and embraced,” she remarked.
Ms. Clever went on to add that she was optimistic that her presence on the island would serve as a way to break the stereotypes that locals may have of the United States and in turn, upon her return home her experience here would do likewise, “thus bridging the cultural gap between the US and the Caribbean.”
Aleisa Selman, another Peace Corp Volunteer in also speaking to Miyvue.com, explained that the whole idea of a Peace Corp Volunteer was not to have too much of a presence but to facilitate change for the better.
Selman added that in times past when the Volunteers were just deployed to teach, things have changed since then.
“No longer do we just assist with teaching in the schools but we also assist with many community groups and Non-Governmental Organizations.”
She concluded by saying that even though change is slow, it was steady.
Peace Corp continues to make its mark on humanity as another milestone of 49 years has been reached.
