Perkins faces first full parliamentary sitting as Speaker

Perkins was elected as Deputy Speaker on 14th May, 2015, and served as Speaker on several occassions, in the absence of former Speaker Franklyn Brand.

Brand resigned from the post in May this year due to ill health. Speaker Perkins, when elected, promised to follow in the footsteps of his predecessor, former Speaker Brand in ‘upholding proper conduct’ of the National Assembly.

Perkins was quoted as saying, “I will do all that is necessary to ensure order and decorum in this House.”

But several opposition members have said they were not in favour of Perkins, nor were they consulted. Further, opposition members have said publicly that Perkins was stiffling parliamentary expression and have made unfair decisions during sittings he conducted while he was deputy.

The National Assembly will start from 10 am, at the National Assembly, Government Headquarters, and will be carried live on ZIZ Radio and Television and other radio stations.
