Phunnmakers Carnival Band Officially Launched

One of the groups that is hoping that they would emerge ahead of the pack, is the ten year old Mas camp, known as PhunnMakers, which on Friday, 5th November, officially launched its carnival presentation, at the Phunn Spot, located on the corner of the Kim Collins Highway and Frigate Bay Road.

The troupe is hoping to attract approximately 200 members, who would parade in four sections of 50 revellers each, according to organizers.

This year the mas camp has decided to dedicate its presentation to one of St. Kitts’ most distinguished and accomplished artistes, Mr. Elston Nero, known in the calypso world as the King Ellie Matt.

The theme for this year’s presentation has therefore been aptly styled, ‘De Legend’.

Family members and friends along with the Minister of Culture, Ms. Marcella Liburd, as well as top executives of the National Carnival Committee, joined the mas camp leaders, for the impressive launch ceremony on Friday night.

“Viva St. Kitts”, “De Wicked Fifer”, “Yankee in Action” and “Patsy”, the camp’s four sections, were presented to a fair size gathering of invitees, which included, members of the media, potential members and corporate partners.

Following the display, Mas Leader, Christine Walwyn provided details about the four sections as well as registration and the troupe’s capacity.

According to Walwyn, Phunnlakers are catering 50 persons for each section with a registration fee of $250 EC or $100 USD per person. “Registration can be done online through our website at, www.phunnmakers.com or visit my office at Victoria Rd,” she added.

It was also noted that the 3 time Road March Champions, Grand Masters, will be the band providing music for the troupe on Parade Day.

“A number of activities are also in store for revellers who want to be a part of the Punnmakers mas camp.  At what is now known as The Phunn Spot, entertainment will be on site every weekend, leading up to 16th December,” said Ms Walwyn.

“Night Mas”, a new initiative to this year’s carnival is also part of the Phunnmakers line of activities. This will be held on 17th December, as an all inclusive fete at the Port Zante terminal which according to Walwyn, will be transformed for the occasion.

Phunnmakers will be celebrating 10 years as a Mas Camp in the January, 2011.
