Clarke, who recently announced the PRTA would be partnering with Caribvision – an internationally broadcast television channel run by the Caribbean Media Corporation (CMC) – to form the circuit, told Barbados TODAY his recent visit to Grenada to promote the initiative was promising.
“Things went extremely well. Our meetings went very well and the stakeholders are really excited about this new venture,” he explained.
“The people in Grenada were so impressed with what we presented, they have decided to put road tennis courts near to their cruise terminals so that they can show it off to the tourists.
“They also have plans to hold a tournament there for the citizens, which will help to sensitize and expose them to the sport,” Clarke added.
The CEO said his next stop would be Antigua, which he plans to visit during the first week of the New Year.
He outlined this was just the beginning of a two-year plan, which would see him visit all 23 Caribbean territories to which Caribvisionbroadcasts.
Clarke insisted that while the professional league would see tournaments being held across the region, Barbados’ players were set to benefit greatly.
He said the opportunity allowed players such as Mark “Venom” Griffith, Antoine “Lil Man” Daniel and Julian “Michael Jackson” White to market their respective brands.
“The PRTA is trying to get players to start creating their own brands, much like the way Michael Jordan created his own brand when he was playing in the NBA.
“They could market their own racquets and their own gear, as Barbados is the most advanced island when it comes to road tennis,” Clarke noted.
“They stand to make a lot of money. The new players from the other islands would grab the opportunity to use the same gear which the best road tennis players in the world use.”
Clarke explained that once everything went according to plan, he expected the professional circuit to be up and running within the next two years.
