PM outlines hectic year for major projects

Basseterre, St. Kitts, 1st February, 2018 ( – Prime Minister Dr. Timothy Harris disclosed Thursday that 2018 will be a busy year for important capital projects on St. Kitts.

Speaking at his first press conference for the year, Prime Minister Harris said major projects will come from both the public and the private sectors.

From the Government’s program will come the construction of 121 more houses, spearheaded by the National Housing Corporation.

In addition, the Government will launch its $10 million Civil Service Mortgage facility.

Public infrastructure projects will include the resurfacing of the Island Main Road, with a start period of before the end of the first quarter of 2018.

The Prime Minister also indicated that work on the National Heroes Park will continue with the construction of the visitor centre, as well as the erection of five statues of the national heroes of St. Kitts and Nevis.

The new Coast Guard facility, a new Customs building and a new government printery building are also among projects to be started this year.

From the private sector, Harris said, “We expect during the course of 2018 that Radisson Hotel will have its grand opening of Phase 1. KOI Resort and Ramada will all cue up during the course of this year for their grand opening.”

He continued, “Meantime, a major hotel shall start Phase 1 of its construction in West Basseterre before the end of this month. 2018 growth then will be driven in part by robust construction activities, increase in stay-over arrivals, cruise tourism, our financial services, and business services.”
