PM promises new cruise pier and arts centre for next term

With the federation recording over a million cruise ship passengers coming to shore between 2013 to 2014, Prime Minister of St. Kitts and Nevis Dr. Denzil Douglas announced that a new pier will be constructed at Port Zante.

Speaking at a public meeting in constituency #1, the prime minister told the gathering that to handle the increase in cruise ship visits, a new pier would be built. He said that the new cruise pier would help increase the inflows of tourist via ships coming into the country, as he spoke of other development plans, including those for New Town and Irish Town.

“I don’t like the state of New Town; some areas need to be cleaned up. Irish town needs to be cleaned up. So we have commissioned a team out of Barbados to study the landscape here in urban Basseterre to give us new images of what our town should look like, as we move from third world to fast world,” Douglas said.

According to the Labour Party leader, the new developments would result in new jobs for the unemployed, adding, also, that PEP workers should do everything within their power to keep the programme going.

“Just let us settle down into the new term, and you will be moved out into full and permanent jobs, so that you would be able to move above minimum wage and get your families higher wages,” Douglas said, in his campaign address in East Basseterre.

On matters of culture and talent, he said the Labour Government would construct a centre for the performing arts.

“I believe the time has come for us to have our own performing arts centre here in St. Kitts, not only in Nevis, but right here in St. Kitts as well. We want the creativity of our people to be seen onstage,” Douglas said.
