Acting Commissioner of Police Stafford Liburd told the media the tragic incident involved an altercation with several persons in which an off-duty police officer was involved. It is understood that the officer was injured in the head and is now on sick leave.
Police reported that a 17-year-old male was shot by the officer during the altercation that took place early Saturday morning (Oct. 17) at Enrique Bar in Charlestown. The juvenile was rushed to the Alexander Hospital in a private vehicle where he was pronounce dead at 4:10 a.m.
Liburd extended condolences on behalf of the Police Force to the family and friends of the deceased youth said to be cricketer Phil Wallace. Liburd also appealed to the community to give support to the family in this their loss.
Meanwhile, while the Violent Crimes Unit conducts its investigation into the fatal incident, the Office of Professional Standards is also conducting its own investigations.
The acting Commissioner of Police said the investigations will be “thorough, and transparently done in order to establish the truth”.
