Police continue investigation of downtown shooting

According to police information, the incident occurred at the Circus at about 11:45 p.m. on Friday, 3rd July. Hospitalized is Akeem Chumney of Upper West Bourne Street. A police report indicates that Chumney and a group of young men from McKnight were on Fort Street near the Circus when an argument occurred.

“An altercation occurred with other persons, and a number of gunshots were fired. Akeem received gunshot injuries to his left upper portion of his back, and was transported to the hospital in private transportation,” the police report states.

An individual is said to be in police custody in relation to this incident.

Unconfirmed reports by persons near the scene suggest that during the gunfire there was an attempt to carjack a Domino’s delivery vehicle. It is said that the driver was struck and pulled from the vehicle while it was still moving. It is believed that an off-duty police officer stopped the car before it rolled into the show windows of the Lucky’s store located on the western side of the Circus.

Police are requesting persons with information related to the incident to contact the Violent Crime Unit at 467-1886,467-1887, or 467-1888, the nearest police station, or Crime Stoppers at 1-800-8477 (TIPS).
